The festival typically starts with the New Year's Eve dinner, also known as 'Nian Ye Fan'. This is a feast of traditional Chinese dishes, such as fish and dumplings, which symbolize abundance and reunion. After dinner, families gather together to watch the New Year's Eve countdown shows on TV.

On New Year's Day, people wear new clothes, visit family and friends, and exchange gifts called 'hongbao' (red envelopes) filled with money. The money is usually given to children as a symbol of good luck and blessings. Other customs include lighting fireworks and hanging red paper cutouts and couplets with挥春 (wishing spring) messages.

The second day of the festival is called 'Chunyun' and is usually dedicated to visiting relatives and friends. People who are far away often return home for the occasion. The following days are usually spent feasting, playing games, and watching traditional Chinese performances such as opera and dragon and lion dances.

The festival ends with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the lunar month. This is a time for family reunions and to pray for a prosperous future.
