主要生活在地球的南半球，目前已知全世界的企鹅共有十七种或十八种，其中四种生活在热带赤道，分别是汉波德企鹅、麦哲伦企鹅、黑脚企鹅、加拉帕戈斯企鹅，皆属于环企鹅属；完全生活在极地的只有皇帝企鹅及阿德利企鹅两种。
