凡是有多个国家或联邦制的多个州组成的国家名前面就必须加“the”。

例如： the UK（由，大不列颠岛上的英格兰、威尔士和苏格兰以及爱尔兰岛东北部的北爱尔兰以及一系列附属岛屿共同组成的4个国家构成），the US.（由50个州联邦而成）。所以:

美国：the United States of America

=the U.S.或U.S.A.(带不带小圆点都可以)

英国：the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

=the UK.
