(2)Thethreemajoroceanshaveattractedincreasinginterestasthestudyofmaritimehistoryhasexpandedbeyondwhatmightmoreproperlybecallednavalhistory,whichconcentratesonwarfare(orpeace-keeping)onthesurfaceofthesea,togreaterinvolvementwiththewiderquestionsofhow,whyandwhenpeoplecrossedlargemaritimespaces,whetherfortradeorasmigrants,andwhatsortofinterdependencewascreatedbetweenlandsfarapartfromoneanotherbythismovementacrosstheoceans.Thishasledtodebatesabouttheoriginsofglobalization,someofwhichhavebeenconductedatcross-purposes,sincetheconceptof‘globalization’isavagueonethatcanbedefinedinmanyways.

(3)AquestionrelatedtothethemeofglobalizationthathasoftenbeenraisediswhyEuropeansopeneduproutesacrosstheworldafter1500,inthewakeofColumbusanddaGama,whiletheChinese,underZhengHe,launchedextraordinarilyambitiousvoyagesintheearlyfifteenthcenturythatcametoasuddenstop.Thisleadsintoarangeofquestionsaboutthe‘GreatDivergence’betweenEuropeandAsiaorothercontinents,although,aswithglobalization,muchdependsonthecriteriaoneadoptstomeasuretheprocess.ThisbookmakesplainthedramaticeffectoftheentryofEuropeantradersandconquerorsintodistantoceansfollowingthevoyagesofColumbusanddaGama,whilealsoinsistingthatColumbus,daGamaandtheworldstheyexploredcanonlybeexplainedbylookingattheirlongantecedents.
