Itis,asEliotrecognises,bothaprivilegeandaprofoundnightmaretohearthatgrassgrowingandthatsquirrel’sheartbeating–and,also,byextension,tofeeleverythingsodeeply.Wemightwell,asshesometimesdid,longforalittlemore‘well-waddedstupidity’toblockitallout.
Nevertheless,Eliot’slinesofferusawaytoreinterpretouranxietywithgreaterdignityandbenevolence.Ouranxietyattacksemergefromadoseofclaritythatiscurrentlytoopowerfulforustocopewith–butisn’tforthatmatterwrong.Wepanicbecausewerightlyfeelhowthintheveneerofcivilizationis,howmysteriousotherpeopleare,howimprobableitisthatweexistatall,howeverythingthatseemstomatternowwilleventuallybeannihilated,howrandommanyoftheturningsofourlivesare,howpreywearetoaccident.Anxietyissimplyinsightthatwehaven’tyetfoundaproductiveusefor,thathasn’tyetmadeitswayintoartorphilosophy.It’samadworldthatinsiststhattheanxiousarethecrazyones.
Weareinsuchahurrytoseeanxietyasasickness,wefailtonoticeitshealthandalmostdistinctivewisdom.Itisalegitimateresponsetotheoddityofgoingtoparties,ridingpublictransportormorewidely,ofbeingalive.
Weshouldneverexacerbateoursufferingbytryingtopushourdisquietaggressivelyaway.Ouranxietyisn’tdeplorableorasignofweakness.It’ssimplythejustifiableexpressionofourmysteriousparticipationinadisorderedanduncertainworld.
